I attended a dinner held in the family room, kitchen bar area of this spectacular showcase home. Chef Kyle Gage from The Sample Room created this perfect fall menu and the owners of this restaurant cheered on their team while Chef Gage shared his kitchen tips and details of the dish. Filling this home with happy memories is especially sweet for the Laceks because their last remodeling project ended in tragic circumstances.
The remodeling was so extensive that designers had to push back their annual showcase event from spring to fall. The second home on the tour, located about a mile away, is a condo at The Edgewater near Lake Calhoun. At this location designers had an empty shell of a dwelling with which to work, creating a home for a hypothetical tenant who appreciates clean-lined, sophisticated spaces.
About Twin Cities Design Scene
When the doors opened to tour the home this past fall, visitors were asked to vote for their favorite spaces. See the rooms that won attention and be inspired by how local designers brought the homeowners’ vision of a luxurious lakeside retreat to life. You can almost hear the surf when you visit this year’s designer showcase home. Outside, it’s clad in cedar shakes, like a Hamptons beach house built to weather the salty breeze. Inside, the home is all blues and sandy hues, with finishes, textures and accents that evoke driftwood, rope, shells and sea glass.

From hayrides to apple picking to leaf peeping, there are many ways to enjoy the fall season. But for those interested in tantalizing their senses in a different way, the Mpls. The Front Porch "The wrapped covered porch is the key to this entire design because it provides the connectivity from space to space," says Terry. The porch's deep dimensions offer ample space for multiple seating and dining areas—a plus when entertaining large groups of people. Retractable screens allow the homeowners to enjoy the lake-facing sunroom in any season.
Fifteen years ago, they were eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. But their full-term baby girl, Faith, died in utero, because of a problem with the umbilical cord. An in-ground trampoline is just one of the Minneapolis home's designer touches. The Lacek parents have some cool new spaces of their own, including his-and-hers master baths and closets. “I love him dearly, but after 16 years of sharing a bath, I needed my own,” Susan said. “The kids were at an age where they were wanting friends over, and some privacy,” Susan said.

The family won’t move into their home until Oct. 23, once public tours are over, but the girls are bringing their friends around to check out its hangout-worthy features. The backyard boasts a small pool, an outdoor kitchen, a tree swing, a hanging bed and even an in-ground trampoline for gymnast Ally. Many of the lower level rooms are easily converted from indoor to outdoor spaces with the use of large sliding glass doors. The back porch has an invisible screen to help keep the bugs out but allows for the family to enjoy the beautiful fall air. This perfect fall evening began with a tour of this casual but elegant home and ended with the perfect pairing of food, wine, decor and friends, new and old.
In the planning stage Root River Hardwoods provided several quotes for different options as that core trio moved towards the final plan. The Laceks’ new home is full of brand-new furniture and accessories, but there are also many mementos of the past. Treasured family photos are incorporated into the design, including a gallery in the sunroom and a huge photo collage mural in the upstairs hall. At the end of the hall is a portrait of the family dogs, one that died while the project was underway and the other a rescue dog they adopted when they were living in Anguilla several years ago. To create those spaces, the Tudor house was gutted and expanded from 4,500 to 6,600 square feet.

Kraemer & Sons, the builder, and Sharratt Design & Co., the architect, are two of the most prestigious firms in the Twin City custom home market. We developed this video to highlight the artistry that is fundamental to building a home of this complexity. Because every bit of this project is custom, every bit of this video is also custom, including the music. This video could not have been produced without the wonderful graphics and simulations provided by Sharratt Design. Without Landmark’s artistic understanding of architectural photography and their lighting design, this would not be a visually stunning video. European style and Hamptons influences combined in the 2017 Mpls.St.Paul ASID MN Showcase Home.

Numerous family photos don the walls, with a gallery wall in the sunroom and a mural in the upstairs hallway. A number of paintings from local artists hang on wall space not dedicated to family portraits. The Laceks are self-described "sun and water people," and wanted to incorporate coastal elements that reminded them of their time living in the Caribbean. The American Society of Interior Designers advances the interior design profession and communicates the impact of design on the human experience.
Great Room designed by Bonnie Birnbaum, ASID, Bonnie Birnbaum Interiors, and Diane Lumpkin, Allied ASID, Diane Lumpkin Design. All guests must park at Lord Fletcher's and take the complimentary 3 minute shuttle ride to the home. There will be Showcase Home Tour signage and a tent in the lot where you can catch the shuttle. But the girls and their friends were growing up rapidly, and the Laceks wanted their home to be the hangout of choice during their high school years. “We wanted to stay a little closer, know where our kids are and who their friends are,” Mark said.
“We didn’t have architectural detail to work around,” said Christine Happel of Ethan Allen in Woodbury, who designed Ally’s room with Elsa Dean of Ethan Allen in Edina. A Minneapolis showcase home reflects a family's love of water and casual living. "They said 'We don't like sheet rock. We really love other textures, other architectural features.' So floors, walls and ceilings all have really unique details," McKay said. "Susan had quite extensive house boards and Pinterest boards for the designers," McKay said.
Root River Hardwoods has the privilege of manufacturing and providing millwork for many of the finest homes being built in the Twin Cities area. Our customers are builders who have the experience in managing these difficult jobs. And we work carefully to produce faithfully what the architects, who specialize in these remarkable projects, draw. We thought it would be interesting to highlight the collaboration between the architect and the builder, and to describe the planning that goes into producing these wonderful homes. While we don’t dwell on it in this video, the planning between the client, builder, and architect flows downstream to the vendors.
